I basically just another member of the teenage internet population (15). I am a gray hat hacker/cracker, can negotiate online better than most "predators" and law enforcement, and am fully aware of most things that go on. Since this site is automatically bookmarked on most computers in my school, it grabbed my curiosity. Upon reading the material and propaganda here, I have observed some misconceptions about cyber-communication and the nature of the internet itself on this forum. If anybody wishes to ask me a question, I will check this thread from time to time and answer it. Questions must be as specific as possible and related to internet safety in some way. The purpose of my presence and participation is to help educate parents on what is really on the internet, and how to protect your kids against it (so that I might stop seeing so many people acting stupid on IRC). I will also answer questions about myself so that you can get a better idea about who is on the internet. If I deem you to be intelligent and satisfying to talk to, I may even give you my email address so that we can talk some more (I will not do live interviews or talk on the telephone however, that is the line).

Could you pls not text on this board, which is for non-texting people too? Abbreviations are fine but - so everybody can understand - pls text on phones and in IM, not here, ok? This forum's for people of all ages and degrees of tech literacy. Thanks so much,
Anne

Well a few people were embarassed. they literally called peoples names out and in some cases, were able to tell them exactly what they did over the weekend. Nobody was really offended, most were just shocked. It was very personal in a sense.they also had a slideshow with a lot of shots of profiles pickin out stuff which shouldnt be there and photos which could be accessed. it was defnitly an eye-opener to how much information you could be giving out accidently. I personally went home and went through my bebo ensuring there was nothin on it and everything was defnitly set to private! glad i could help in any way

This is really interesting and helpful to know, Kristina 3003 - thanks for posting! What an eye-opener the school gave everyone. Was anyone hurt - I mean, did any student feel singled out or super embarrassed by the presentation, or did they somehoe make it more impersonal?

Hi Well im 16 and would like to think I'm sensible on the internet- eben though i regularly use msn and bebo. I know i have an addiction lol but i would just like to point out that many parents dont seem to understand how msn messenger works, and that as teenagers, we are simply just chatting to our mates as we have the right to decline and accept people. and so IMO msn is perfectly safe. its no different to us calling our friends! as for bebo...my bebo- i like to keep things secret from my parents, and im paranoid that they are spyying on me through bebo so my bebo has always ben private. so therefore as long as your profile remains private and you dont add anyone you don know, then it is perfectly safe also. however, i also understand that there are some idiots out there who like to give out personal information and personally in these cases: theyvr been warned and they asked for it! like my school carriedout this assembly and the prefect team went on bebo and went through profiles from our school and picked out information from it and then gave an assembly on it and like called out peoples names and started telling them all this stuff theyd found out form looking at their profiles.needless to say the whole school got freaked out and went home and changed their bebos instantly. maybe more schools should do this to try and get through just how much information you can get from comments being left etc. it defnitly worked in my school!

I kind of think of the Internet that way too - the world, or at least a digital mirror of it. Not even a microcosm or cross-section, but pretty much the whole thing, with social spaces, academic spaces, entertainment spaces, bizarre spaces, highly specialized or clubby spaces, places most people would never want to go, places where kids like to play, space where people design, upload, produce, and communication things, places where people just read, places where teens hang out, places inappropriate for children, spaces of interest only to family members or just about any other group, and then all the technologies, devices, and physical places that help deliver these virtual locations and activities to everybody. That's one reason why I find the term "Internet addiction" strange because the Internet is such a vast, diverse "thing" for so many different uses, behaviors, activites. But I ramble ....

:B As the saying goes, arguing over in the internet is like running in the special olympics.... Jokes aside, I'm pretty skeptical of your 'hacking' skills, because most people calling themselves hackers tend to be nothing more than script kiddies~ Not an attack on you by any measure. . . Anyway, the 'nature of the internet?' What exactly do you believe this to be, i think it's a pretty lulzy phrase, myself. The internet is the world, just anonymous... At least, that's how i see it. aaaanndd, i myself, am just a member of the teenage population of the internet, fourteen years of age myself. -- :B
