your opinions on advantages of Social Networks?

I am writing a synthesis paper entitled "Social Networking Tools: A Blessing or a Curse?" I was wondering what any of your guys opinions are on:

the safety of pages like MySpace and Facebook?

any spacific advantages of Networking sites?

any practical advantages (i.e. business advantages, coworker contact, school projects) of social networking sites?

PLEASE include your first and last names so i can correctly use MLA citation format (I really hope that doesn't scare anyone off!), otherwise i cannot use your post. Thank you to all who respond, your educated opinion is extremely appreciated!!

Re: your opinions on advantages of Social Networks?

As I write this, I am at a loss. I have been having the same problem online repeatedly and it seems to be getting worse instead of better. I don't think I have the tough skin it takes to deal with cyberspace. Maybe I expect too much....or am too impatient with people....I don't know.

But I keep getting to where I hate being on here now. I have been "attacked" by people when I have done NOTHING wrong....I innocently ask someone for help and am berated for being sarcastic....

People online are just CRUEL...and I don't know if I have the strength to handle it anymore.

I had a doctor's appointment yesterday and when I came home and turned on my computer I was met with 2 hostile messages....one telling me "I'm not your friend" and that "I had no business sending her messages". The other person accused me of "stealing" her friends because we had a lot of the same ones. How can you be on a social networking site and NOT be social yourself?
How can you blast someone who introduces herself to you FIRST before he or she sends a friends request? There are too MANY rules to this and I just can't keep up!

For now, I really think they are a CURSE...because it seems that some people just don't CARE how they treat others and the anonymity is their excuse to be hurtful and hateful towards others.

Don't know if I can take that anymore.
