Does anyone know?

Does anyone know of any bills being passed around about children's pictures being posted on myspace or any other web domain? The reason I am asking is I think children under a certain age should be illegel to post. Only because of the Pediphiles on line.

Thanks

You can't prevent that kind of thing with a bill.
You have a permanent mask while online, so the kids can pretend to be 18 or older.
Do you really think a bill would help then?

You're right that there needs to be more awareness about putting too much information about children on the Web. A child's picture should never have his/her full name, nor locating info, with it on a Web page.

But even if the photos are of a normal veriety does it not open these children up to pediphiles? I know of one child whos picture was put online by his father along with where they were from, where the father graduated and how old the child is and his name. they are from a small town in Michigan and it would be easy for someone to find them. I know this may only be a lack of common sense to put all this online but, the childs mother was not even informed about this being done.

Pre-Law, general obscenity law (online as well as offline) makes it illegal to download, possess, distribute, etc., nude or sexually explicit images of people under 18. If anyone runs across photos like that online it'd be good to capture the URLs and report them to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children's CyberTipline.com (or at 800.843.5678). In Canada, the tipline is at Cybertip.ca, in the UK at CEOP. As for children posting explicit pictures of themselves, that's technically illegal too, but the law has barely caught up with that disturbing problem (usually kids have no idea these can get passed around, reposted, shared on the P2P networks, or otherwise illegally distributed). A really tough example involving a 13-year-old girl is here, and you can go to my article "Protecting teen reputations on Web 2.0" for the National Center's legal perspective on this growing problem that we feel parents need to know about. You can read more about the law where the social networks are concerned in NetFamilynews here. Hope that answers your question. All best,
