Do this, do not install any software, it is useless with protecting your teen. And you may learn things about them you would otherwise not want to know. You do not need to know everything about your child, plain and simple. -- Watch, watch me disappearing completely/In the dream of destruction and rebirth, this poem will be sung/In this fragmented sky, aaah, dozing, you had searched for the feeling that was wished for. I've said the same thing time after time after time and again, ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS EDUCATE YOUR CHILD. that's it. Tell them about how what horrible things can happen if they post personal information/arrange meetings with people they meet online. Do not sugarcoat things when you say it to you're child. Installing such software is pointless, especially for a teen. This is firstly because he probably knows to simply uninstall such programs. Secondly, they don't work. For every Myspace that a program blocks, there is bound to be two or three porn sites it doesn't. People like many of those who post on this site are simply scared of what they do not know about. There is crime in virtually every nook and cranny of today's society.

The short answer (much more easily said than done!) is to talk with that teen - ask him or her how s/he uses the Web to communicate with friends, what the favorite sites and IM software are, and whether he or she would give you the URL of her blog or social-network profile. You don't need tech literacy to parent or have a conversation about the online part of someone's social life. I think there's a bit of a partnership involved with or folded into the age-old parent-child relationship - the partnership between life literacy and tech literacy. Both are needed to negotiate this pretty uncontrollable user-driven phase of the Web. Does that help at all?
