If sites like MySpace had parental controls would teens just leave?

There are some who feel that social-networking sites ought to have parental controls, or at least give parents the ability to monitor what their kids do on these sites. We wonder if that could have unintended consequence of causing teens to leave, perhaps to more dangerous sites, or sites parents don't know about/can't find. What do you think? (We'd love to get some teens' views on this too!)

I still haven't yet either, but it is infuriating how repetitive it can get after awhile

exactly what I have said for the past year or two. Good luck with trying to convince them with what we are trying to say. It's pretty much a lost cause.

Yup, parental controls would mean parents would be able to see everything going on, right? We teens hate that. A lot. Then again, I hate MySpace, so as long as the emos and their crappy photography stay away from the sites I frequent at, I'm fine.

I'm sure that actually TALKING to your kid about being safe online, checking phonebills for strange calls, and looking out for suspicious packages will have a much better effect, without the parental controls.. I mean, teach your kids to be responsible and you will have nothing to worry about.

DrumCorpsMember,
I happen to disagree.
When you're online, you have a permanent mask-meaning you can be whoever you want.
Setting and age restriction would be pointless. Underage users would lie.
Keep in mind that up until it became a regular in the media, MySpace had an age restriction.
And yet, that didn't stop anyone.

I think you should have to be eighteen or older to join any of these sites.

For every site that has too much security, a new one gets created with even less security.

Also, it would be relatively impossible to implement a parental control feature on MySpace. Having that kind of feature would require, one account (the parent) would have to be the administrator of another account (the child).

How do you determine who is a parent of whom when an internet identity is already mostly anonymous?

Yep, I know I would. People need to stop trading away their rights for whatever amount of safety.
