Top 3 Issues for Children on the Internet

In your opinion, what are the 3 most important issues that we should be aware of for our children’s safety on the internet?

My top 3:
1) Teach children moral and ethical behavior on the internet and explain the real world digital world connection.
2) Explain the potential problem with giving out personal personal information to strangers and exactly what information is considered personal.
3) Parents should become more knowledgeable on what children do on the internet. (Get your own myspace account, experiment with AIM, etc...)

I agree with Larry's comments about the flyer. One thing that is missing from the flyer (and this thread) is:

Find positive online activities for your kids.

This of course begs the question "can you?" Instead of always focusing on negatives regarding the Net (spurred on no doubt by the constant mainstream media blitzing), we ignore the obvious. If kids don't have something positive to do, they probably will end up doing something negative. I made a case to isafe.org (I'm certified there) that they really need to focus on where kids should go that are safe, fun and maybe even socially responsible.

Whether it's Starfall or PBSKids for younger kids or NASA, Takingitglobal and Nabuur for the older ones, we need to emphasize the positive and take an active role in where the kids go and what they do. I have about 3,000 educational links at http://www.mybookmarks.com/public/coops It needs some updating and reorganizing, but they're all "educational," safe and many are fun for students. Try some of those with your kids sometime.

Good idea and you have some good tips. Suggestions: Take a look at your new page from a computer other than the one you created it with. On mine there are missing graphics. Re-think the term "problems the Internet causes." Does the Internet really cause these problems or does it just bring them to light and exacerbate them. Not sure of the answer myself but it's worth thinking about.

Thanks for posting and please encourage others from the local Girl Scout groups to visit our forum and advice sections as well.

Best,

Larry

I made an internet fly for parents and children for my Girl Scout project. I will post it here for everyone to see.

Please pass it on to other parents and concerned people if these tips are helpful. thank you!!

If parents and teens subscribed to what you said in your post, we probably wouldn't be discussing teen internet safety. I agree 100% with your Top 3.
