University Security

Hi there,

I have an older sister who is going to be attending a university this year. I know that she uses the webcam alot to talk with friends, and I just wonder how safe it is. Is there a chance that, like, someone like a computer hacker student at the school can hack into her computer and watch her?!?! That is just so scary...

While it is possible for a hacker to break into her camera, it isn't likely unless a talented hacker is motivated to do it. That person would have to be able to launch the software remotely to turn on the camera. There are some safeguards she can take. The best one is to unplug the camera (from the PC's USB port) when she's not using it. Short of that, she should cover it or turn it around so it's not pointing towards the room. That, however, wouldn't prevent the audio feed which can be prevented by unplugging the camera or other audio source.
