I am working on a small networking site going live soon in Europe. As a Mom, first and foremost I am taking online safety very seriously and am interested to hear different views and opinions on various aspects of online safety. Keeping children safe and away from online predators is our main goal. If you have any ideas, suggestions, concerns or if you have had an experience (good or bad) with other sites which you would like to share we would be grateful to hear from you. The more we learn, the more we can take a informed view on the safety measures we can put in place on our site.

Thank you very much Anne, I had not seen your article but will work through this and the reports linked to it. On first views they seem like the most comprehensive we have seen so far! We will definately give you our feedback. Kind Regards,

Did you all happen to see the best-practices guidelines for social-networking sites out of the UK? I highlighted these (from Britain's Home Office) in NetFamilyNews last week (with a link to the report itself) and also featured the milestone Byron Review the week before. There's lots of solid thinking in these based on some of the best research available on both sides of the Pond (and I've seen no other best practice guidelines anywhere else, including the US). But I'd love to get your reax. All best,
Anne

Gerard, thank you for taking the time to reply. In our research over the last year we have found that many sites, parents, teachers and even authorities are quick to complain about Social Sites and moan about what they dont like, but very few have stepped up to say what they feel would make sites safer for them and their children to use. Your suggestions are all very helpful, thank you, all of which we have already encorporated. We totally agree with you that it would be very useful to see more operators involved regarding this issue to be putting forward usable suggestions and solutions to help move online safety forward.

I second your proposal, Leigh. As someone who is also currently working on a site with some social networking features, which is intended to be family-friendly, I think it would be very useful to have a set of principles for webmasters to refer to. Perhaps an FAQ-type thing analogous to the list of points for children at http://www.safekids.com/kidsrules.htm - which, by the way, is a useful link - I am including it in my draft 'safety policy'. A clear channel for users to report offensive behaviour to site administrators, giving users the capability to block messages from other users, explaining to children and other potentially vulnerable users how to use such features, and explaining the significance of putting details such as email, IM or telephone numbers on a profile (in language that is understandable without being patronising!) - there are a few things off the top of my head. But it would be good to see some distilled ideas from operators of websites regarding this issue.

Are there any parents out there who would like to contribute to suggesting what they would like to see more of on SNS's regarding Online Safety? Please reply as we would like to hear different views and opinions.

Leigh - I think your question deserves an answer. Firstly - If you have not read these articles - you should. They are both essential reading to parents : http://www.connectsafely.org/articles--advice/articles-and-advice/social-networking-dangers-in-perspective.html And http://www.connectsafely.org/articles--advice/safety-advice-articles/safety-myths-on-web-2.0.html Ann Collier and Larry Magid are frequent contributors to the collection of articles that you may find under the link "Articles and advice" which you will find at the top of your page - right now. The two articles have a reasonably new angle : For once - the dangers of networking is put in perspective - and the values of social networking is acknowledged. The articles have been translated and today they can be found on my schools website - along with many of Larry's writings about safe networking. (Articles from safekids.com and safeteens.com. Sites that were among the first websites that did give kids advice about netsafety.) Olav
