I was disturbed to find several inappropriate pictures available for me to click on when I tried to access the video recommended on your website teaching kids how to be safe on the internet--one of the things that is blatanly lacking is our ability as parents to get forums such as Utube to keep pornographic/suggestive images off pages where our kids may innocently be visiting....such as a link from a "safe teens" site. Recently my 10 yr old daughter was looking at puppy websites...after about 5 minutes of looking at cute puppies right in the middle of the page was a suggestively posed topless obviously young girl with her arms covering her breasts--why are websites allowing these videos to be shown on "kid" sites...what kind of money trail is letting this happen??...and does anyone have enough courage to say no??? Do we have any recourse as parents other than to never let our kids online without us previewing every page?

Not necessarily, ShannonGB. If you're talking about a PC that's running Microsoft's Vista operating system or a Mac running the latest Version 10 operating system, yes, you have great parental controls that can be configured in a lot of ways - filtering, blocking other apps, etc. (I think Microsoft would like to see more uptake of these). If you're talking about filtering or monitoring that's installed like other software on top of the OS (such as Word or a browser), no, obviously that has to be bought and installed separately. Hope that answers the question Happy holidays!

Hi. I am just curious. Is there a security or parental control software installed on your kid's computer? Usually this does the trick. -- "Mother is God in the eyes of a child." Please visit http://instantamber.com/news/ for more updates.

Thanks for posting, cybersavvy. I hope you received our email asking for the Web addresses of the pages where you saw inappropriate pictures - we'd like to look into it but can't based on the info in your post.
The following is in our email, too, but I'm posting it here in case useful to other parents. If your daughter stumbled on the offensive page while using a search engine, was filtering turned on? You may already know this, but - for example - on Google's Preferences page, you can choose moderate or strict filtering, then click "Save Preferences" at the bottom, and all searches in Google will be filtered, whether or not the computer gets turned off, unless the preferences are changed (we have a rule at our house that Google is used and Preferences remain untouched). That doesn't work in every household, but it can help. If not, the next step would be filtering software, depending on the age of the child.
All best,
Anne
