Real-life learning in virtual worlds

Wonder how and what students are taught in virtual worlds? Watch this video (13:46) at Teachers TV.

You'll see how middle-school student Daniel made the case for and, "in a couple of weeks," built an exhibition of the history of steam engines in Second Life, his teacher said, and how a group of students were asked to help turn a crumbling historic jetty on the North Sea coast into a tourism destination by building and restoring it virtually, again in Second Life.

Would love to get your thoughts on this! (Would especially love to hear from teachers who are using VW's in the classroom.)

Hello Maureen! I'm 17 now and I've been useing teeen second life version. There's a whole bunch of stuff you need to learn to be making money! I've been attending highschools on there that GATE clteens who are in ap classes in their real life school who teachthe vituarl classes (like history algebra and school like classes). I've learned so many facts on there. But that's not all you learn. I've been free of secondlife for a year now cause my computer couldn't run it and now im getting one that can. And its has giving me a huge disire to teach myself computer programming and photoshop. I am homeschooled so my mom was a little like hmm I don't know until I showed her a little about it. It has made a difference in my life. But if you let your son on those types of games, there is safety risks but if you trust him not to fully trust ANYONE and not to give his personal information out then this would be an awesome experience for him! If he gets really in to fashion designing or Scripting or even buying and renting land he can make real money :) I think it would be completely awesome if more teachers used secondlife in their teaching :)
