Hi, our daughter told us she saw some stuff online that was disturbing. We checked the history and it was pornography - extremely graphic and totally explicit. It was totally vile. We are very concerned about the effect it may have on our daughter but aren't quite sure how to broach the subject. Or the best way to deal. I have locked down the pc as best I can and added safety filters to searches and will keep a close eye on her in future. However, immediate concern is how to talk to her or approach the topic. Has anyone experienced similar and have some advice we could use? Thanks.

We as parent are worried on this as the porn is everywhere in the cyber. the only way is to guide them through and talk face to face to them. This is to ensure they are able to understand it. Just my 2 cents of advice.

Confort her. Don’t blame your child but help her avoid problems in the future. Have a open discussion with her. Remember — how you respond will determine whether she trusts you the next time she encounters a problem and how she learns to deal with problems on her own. As to bocking the bad sites, you can try the third-party software. Such as the internet filter for Mac. It's helpful and I'm using it on my son's Lion so as to give him a green network environment. -- Smiling Sunshine~~

Thats a very sensitve subject, by myself having kids of the same age. I would approach the situation very cautiously. Try not to say the wrong thing and make her feel uncomfortable as possible about talking about what she saw~

Thanks for posting. I had something similar happen to my son about a year ago. He had come across a moving flash popup advertising a masturbation tool. It had a man using this device and although his genitals were concealed, he was otherwise naked. It was a really disturbing image. We talked to my son about it gently; we didn't want it to make it more of an ordeal than it already was. We also apologized to him that he should see something like that. We did have filtering software in place, but we now have something stronger. It's frustrating when your children come across images like this because we want our kids to enjoy their innocence for as long as possible. The site was a site with game "cheat codes" on it. He had found it while searching for 'Club Penguin'! However, I think that if you can limit such exposure to the bare minimum then the influence should not be too great. In other words, a one-off access can be mitigated with gentle guidance from parents and a lot of positive influences.

My son viewed some ugly things online as well. He is 10. I simply spoke to him clearly about what he saw and told him these are things that should not be viewed, that some of these things are normal grown up behavior, and that certain things were wrong. Having a open discussion helped and he felt better, but sad to say the memory is still there. Take heart and talk whenever she asks question, of course at her level.

Hi Maureen. Thanks for your reply. It is some consolation that she came to us. I know a psychiatrist, I'll get in touch with him too and see what he thinks. Thanks again.

Welcome, refresh, You must be so proud that your daughter knew to come to you, and that she's already showing such great instincts. I'd compliment her on that, and tell her she did the right thing by telling you. As for how to address what she saw, I’m no expert but I’d explain that the material was intended for adults, and that it wasn't her fault she saw it. She is very young, though, and some of these concepts may be difficult for her to understand. Have you thought about talking to a family therapist or child psychologist for advice? Given your daughter’s age, I think it’s a good idea. Maureen ~ Maureen Kochan ConnectSafely forum manager
