Children and their vulnerability to internet adverts.

Hi, I am a media student at Bridgwater College in Somerset. As part of my A-Level I am looking into child safety on the internet regarding children and vulnerability to advertising.

After reading many reports and articles concerning child welfare and advertising on the internet, I came to wonder whether we are giving children too much protection regarding advertisemnets on the internet. Each day we are subjected to hundreds of advertisemnets, particularly through TV, magazines and even transport. As children are equally exposed to these sorts of adverts, may I ask what concerns you particularly about the vulnerability of children, advertising and the internet?

Id like some opinions please!Parents and kids :]

As a mom, I agree. I have 12 and 14 year old sons...and we take careful note of what pops up on thier computer screen. It's unfortunate, but it's out there.

I just thought I would add something thing to this one. Some of the adverts that my son have gotten on the internet are very, shall we say, RISK-A! I mean that are those that invite him to see the 'Girls having Fun', or 'The Men having fun with Girls', etc. He's only 12yrs old, and he has learned to ignore them. Now he doesn't see this on our TV at anytime. Or in any of the magizines, such as "FastCompany", or "O", "People", etc. Or, even his such as "Teen Nick", or Sports Illustrated Kids. And, as far as traveling in the big town of Gettysburg. Well, the only signs he'll see here are the historical ones about the battles of the civil war. So, when he open an ad for 'Girls on Girls' that did open his eyes to things that he had never saw. And, it also gave us a time to talk about why ALL men don't look at these pictures as he then though was normal. Of course I brought in the big guns, his Uncle Rob, my oldes son. After Rob stopped laughing behind my back he got serious and explain to my 12 yr old man to man. So, see to me the internet has many more risky ads than anywhere else! But, that's just a mom opinion.

Hi, Clamandine. Kids' overexposure to commercialism and so-called "immersive advertising" thru advergames and virtual worlds with catalogs for the feeding and furnishing of avatars and their virtual habitats thru use of virtual money earned by gameplay is a concern out there, but I'm curious where you read about it. Just in the tech news media? You may be aware of a new study on all this in the UK, "Fair Game?: Assessing commercial activity on children's favorite Web sites and online environments." If I type this URL correctly on my mobile, it's here: www.ncc.org.uk/nccpdf/poldocs/NCC182rr_fair_game.pdf -- Anne --
