After being invited to a chat session on IMVU, with my oldest son, I decided to do a little investigating on my own.
I have learned one thing...keep your kids off of this site, and unless you like being "flamed" on a regular basis, don't go on yourself.
This chat site is equal to a Web cancer, it is horrible.
The site lures you in with its game play feel, and then you are systematically assaulted in every way to purchase this, and that.I was able to resist, it was difficult for me, and for kids,(especially teens) its an all absorbing torture of the mind, with enough money, they can have virtual sex online!
I was shocked, and disgusted by the content on the average users page, it is unregulated filth.

I am not flaming anyone, I am promoting the use of social networks that are responsible where children are concerned. I do not feel the need to defend myself as a parent, my kids are not a part of that site in any way, and neither am I, perhaps you should read my postings again, they are not intended to be for, or against anyone, simply a contribution to help other parents who may not know about this particular chat site.

dude... let me ask you, who is responsible for what your children see on the pc? its YOU so if you didn't want your kid to use this program THEN DON'T LET HIM I'm 18 and I use it with no sex content, people like me and I'm a bit of a goof off on it. so what if you don't like it? if you don't think your kid should use it then don't let him/her but don't flame people just cuz you don't like something I mean thats like me yelling at people because I don't like mint-ice cream in other words... its just stupid ok so you warned people that old people use it leave it at that I mean ranting like this makes you look like a bad parent and on top of that it makes you look immature so I ask again WHO'S RESPONCABILITY IS IT TO MONITOR WHAT YOUR CHILDREN DO ONLINE? cuz it definitely inst mine or anyones who looks here

You see, the thing you have to realize, is that IMVU is about as filtered as they could make it, and still keep their function appealing. If you put locks on everything, then no one will ever want to play the game, which is bad business. IMVU is a safe site (much safer than myspace, or any other networking site of that nature) and a lot more filtered and locked and safe. And about the advertising, you see more advertising in a half hour TV show than you do on IMVU. Such sites are an inevitability, and the truth is, it could have been MUCH MUCH MUCH worse than it is.

Given the nature of your response, I must assume you were somehow offended by my research.
The truth is, you can lie about your age, unchecked.
Even without purchasing an all access pass, the level of nudity, and suggestive behavior, is beyond what I would consider appropriate for a thirteen year old.
I was merely stating, that aside from all of the well thought out safety warnings, parents may not be aware of certain aspects of this site, at first glance.
To suggest my opinion, formed by researching facts, is somehow a complaint, would do injustice to the message I was attempting to convey.
As to your comment about virtual sex, I am quite sure, there are some who enjoy such exploits, and I don't suggest that they should not, but concealing soft core porn, in a virtual world wrapped up to look like a childrens cartoon, is a recipie for disaster.

First of all RaycerX, you must have paid your son access pass. To see all that, if anybody on IMVU is paying for anybody younger than 18 an access pass they would have found that it would have failed. You need to understand the 3D chat world before posting comments u don't know nohthing about. The Doctor if you call yourself a doctor, get in the virtual world explore it a bit before adding your comment. Come on Ppl get with the program, you as an adult need to understand these virtual world before slaming it. Yes, when you don't pay to become a member you can't do the things that a full member can do in virtual world. There are limitations to what you can and cannot see in a virtual world. Now SecondLife might be different, I've been on there and looked around. That is why I had explored IMVU and There.com. Both sites are pretty safe if you always teach your kids to ask A/S/L before chatting with anybody online there are other adults who will watch our for the younger ones making sure they don't get into any trouble. If you had downloaded the messanger part of IMVU you can see the age of the person you added to your buddylist. Yes, every virtual world has a buddylist and some show the real age of the other person your chatting with. Some tweens and teens can by pass the best security on virtual world because they always ask for age. Some kids will lie just to get the virtual world, you as parents should know what chat program they are getting into. So, I believe Raycerx you or your son had paid for the access pass and or possibly lied to raise the age limit to get into the adult virtual chat world. There are some kids that will slam you no matter what, all you have to do is leave the chat room. No sense in sticking around. Learn to deal with it RaycerX sounds like you don't know nothing but to complain about everything. The other thing not everybody hops on the virtual world to have virtual sex, unless that is what you had in mind???

Thanks, Larry. I'm going to explore this a bit further, as Teen Second Life has stronger parameters in terms of grid demarkation; and as we all know there's a big difference between a 'tween' & a teen mucking about with adults in avatar land. Insightful...I'd queried YPulse on this, for I noticed on imbee, the tween safe site (social media) some of the kids were defecting to IMVU and 'recruiting' kids over there. (e.g. positioning it as 'new/cool/more fun' for early teens.
