I've heard and read recently that college admissions offices and potential employers are more frequently searching MySpace, Facebook and other sites for info on the applicants. I called a few local colleges here in my area and they said they are not doing this, but I'm finding the allegation in more and more places. Anybody have any experience with this?

I did a bit of research on this a couple of years ago and the official line I got from most colleges was that they weren't checking. However, when I dug a bit deeper some admission officers said that younger admission staff were starting to check. Again from informal conversations on this topic, I got the feeling that the practice is more likely with smaller private schools than large state schools. Bottom line -- regardless of whether it's likely, it certainly is possible so our advice remains: Be careful what you post. It might haunt you later on. Larry Magid ConnectSafely.org
