Lori Drew, the St. Louis mom who allegedly used a fake MySpace persona to "torment, harass, humiliate and embarrass" a 13-year-old girl who committed suicide was indicted today by a Los Angeles federal grand jury. According to the Associated Press coverage, Drew "was indicted on one count of conspiracy and three counts of accessing protected computers without authorization to obtain information to inflict emotional distress."
What do you think of the case? Do you think Drew will be prosecuted for a crime?

Thanks, kdm and Deedee, for your posts. Will be interesting to see what happens, especially because, as ConnectSafely co-director Anne Collier points out in a recent blog post, the case uses existing law in an unprecedented way, and essentially "adds 'teeth' to social-networking sites' terms of service, which both parents and teens need to be aware of and which sites need to enforce."
Take good care,
Maureen

It is unfortunate that adults can be stupid in such a cruel manner. She deserves to be prosecuted. Unfortunately, we see many students who exhibit these characteristics when they bully in person or by cyberspace. They are often a reflection of the parent who has raised them. Hopefully, this person's family will learn from her mistakes.

I say hurrah! She should be prosecuted. What she did was wrong on so many levels. Parents are supposed to be models of appropriate behavior! Lori Drew 's actions were misguided at best, illegal at worst.
