Most people are missing the true problem

So I came here a while back before building a social networking aspect into my site. Had to do a bit of research. Now that I have implemented some pieces of it I feel I know a little more of how they work (and how complicated they can become).

Anyway, I feel that almost everyone is missing the problem. Everyone is watching too much dateline (have a seat) and are placing their fears in the wrong places. Are there sick people out there? Yes, but most children do know what to do online and how to act. It is doubtful that they will want to meet some stranger from online. Especially if they are older. Mostly they look for other people their own age (or slightly older/younger).

The problem is actually themselves and other children. Cyberbulling, posting "bad" pictures, saying things they don't mean, and becoming part of the electronic mob. You shouldn't be worried about predators coming to your child but your child going to them. Or even to other kids.

Cyberbullying is by far the biggest issue. My god somethings people say to each other are really, really mean. Truly unbelieveable. And that is only a small part that actually gets flagged by someone and I see. People bashing each other's bands, images, anything. Even among friends it happens.

Second, I have seen pictures of kids as young as 10 (they claim) posting pictures of themselves on my site and they are quite provacative. Mostly a girl thing, I admit, but you do get guys without shirts and stuff (Only rule is no nudity. Causes legality and other problems I don't want to touch). And the things they say are pretty out there and suggestive.

I say forget about having children by themselves on these sites. My experience that doesn't matter. Most of the problems are coming from within the age group through bullying. Obviously I don't have the same problems that, say, myspace might. I don't have to worry about dummy/fake accounts because everyone on the site pretty much don't know each other. The social aspect is second to the actual site.

Thanks for your post, Demexii. I think you're right on the mark. We're concerned about what images and thoughts young people post about themseves and each other too. This needs to be the lionshare of online safety education going forward.--Anne --
