Hi folks, Clearly this is an issue that has been covered... What can a parent do to protect their son/daughter? a. Is there a way to contact to the website and have the abusive material removed? (i've written MySpace and heard nothing back) b. If I can get it removed, how do you insure that it gets removed from archiving sites? c. Any other thoughts ideas for a father who loves his kid and wants to protect them from such public humiliation.... I'm reluctant to contact the parents of the abusing kid b/c I'd expect the revenge cycle to be worse. I'm reluctant to contact the school because they tend to treat every incident with crude battering rams that result in more unintendent consequences than good...

all im gonna say is get a block on the site or take note of the abuse and where it is coming from. recently on myspace there has been alot of hackers getting into peoples account by creating a FAKE LOG IN system, when you kid goes on to the site tell their to type the site in again to make sure its the right one. if the people on her account aka their friends are the one sending the abuse then they too have probably been hacked. TOM the maker of myspace cant do anything about the hackers all he can do is suggest that you kid and their myspace friends change their passwords only once this has been done can you really get the abuse taken off properly. but until then they have the option to delete certain comments but the still my leave a scropt or something i dunno but its worth a try -- Edited by kia at 01/23/2007 3:52 PM -- Edited by kia at 01/23/2007 3:53 PM

Send multiple messages to Myspace. A lot of times in customer service they either lose the email or it never goes anywhere. Send a few just to make sure someone does see it and responds to it. As for the archving sites they are even harder to work with. They don't really like removing content especially if you are not the owner of the site. And there are a lot out there so most likely you won't get them all to take down the page. This topic has been covered multiple times but that is because there still is no answer to it. Depending on the kid and parents you have little you can truly do. Many times if you send a letter to the parents they will take action but that isn't always true and if it fails most likely it will only get worse. You have to judge on who the parents and kid are. I live in a suburban middle class city so kids would do things but whenever a parent got involved it usually meant trouble and the kid would stop. But sometimes parents get defensive of their kid and let them continue. Usually if it is that type of kid you want to lay off. -- You win some, you lose some. But in the end, just make sure you beat the crap out of your enemy.

A false statement about someone that damages the person's reputation. Here's a good dictionary site. Would like to hear from a teen social users how you think parents can help their kids avoid online slander?

Thanks for your post. This has indeed been covered, and unfortunately has no easy answer. First, I'm so sorry to hear your child's going through a difficult time. Have you emailed parentcare@myspace.com? If that's the social site you're talking about, you might get a faster response, but they get tons of email, so give them at least 24 hours, and probably more likely 48-72. Getting a blog or profile deleted, though, is hardly the final solution - it only eliminates one profile, when another abusive one can pop up in its place very quickly. I do think we parents are going to have to talk with one another - with the parents of kids in our children's peer groups - more and more. Not in a confrontational way, but more in a we're-all-in-this-together way. The parents of the child causing the problem may actually appreciate knowing what's going on. Often a "bully" is someone who himself or herself has been victimized. Pls let us know if you don't get help, and we'll try to help - pls send all the information you can, especially the URL of the offending page, to admin@blogsafety.com. All best,
Anne
